What is happening?
I often hear the lament that we are an increasingly polarized people. That a political divide has made civil discourse rare. And that this is causing distress and discomfort in the culture at large. Even families fear a political discussion because of baked-in positions. Is this a condition of post-modern America?
Do you feel this is true?
Some may say “no.” That it is merely the democratic process at work. And that like making sausage, it’s not an unsullied process.
But I suspect that is a minority opinion. It seems that our national political dialogue is rife with blaming, name-calling, and digging in on particular positions with little to no intention of meeting in the middle. And following this, finger-pointing at “the other” when legislative ambitions fall short.
And ordinary citizens seem to take have adopted an us/them worldview.
A good question may be ‘why is this the case?’ What has happened to spike this kind of behavior, this kind of situation? What is the problem?
Or is overemphasis on the problem….the real problem? Does this situation cry out for a new approach- a move away from traditional problem solving?
